Part 1
IELTS Speaking Part 1: Your local area
A 5-minute interview on familiar subjects. The examiner works through short questions about your life, and answers of two or three sentences are usually the right length — long enough to show range, short enough to keep the exchange moving.
The questions
- Are there many shops that sell ice cream near your home?
- Do people still wear watches in your country nowadays?
- Is there much choice of shops in your local area?
- Are there enough quiet places to study or work where you live?
What is being marked
Every part of the test is scored on the same four criteria, each carrying equal weight in the final band.

Practise this one out loud
Reading a cue card is not the same as speaking for two minutes under timing. Take it with an AI examiner that responds to what you actually say, then get a band estimate and the specific sentences that held you back.
